Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my dog's neck?

Fusion By Design Collars are offered in a variety of standard sizes.  All collars have 5 holes, unless otherwise specified.  With the exception of our smallest and largest sizes, the spacing between holes is 3/4".  So a collar that is a 12-15", for example, will have hole placement at 12", 12 3/4", 13 1/2", 14 1/4" and 15".  Collars that are larger than 20", have hole placement every 1".  Collars that are smaller than 10", have hole placement every 1/2".  Therefore, a 20"-24" collar has holes at 20", 21", 22", 23" and 24" and an 8"-10" collar has holes at 8", 8.5", 9", 9.5" and 10".  Once you have measured your dog's neck, choose a collar that will allow your dog to wear their FBD collar somewhere in the middle 3 holes.  That way, you'll always have room to allow for seasonal weight changes.  ;)

Our “Get It Now” collars are crafted in the following sizes:
8"-10" (holes are 1/2" apart)
20"-24" (holes are 1" apart)

Our Custom Collars are crafted with the centre hole set at your dog’s neck size (provided by you).

Collars are sized by NECK SIZE, not overall length.  Ensuring a proper neck measurement is key to selecting a collar that fits your dog properly!

To measure, use a cloth seamstress measuring tape.  DO NOT use a metal tape of any kind.  You will not get an accurate measurement.  If you do not have a seamstress tape, you can use a length of string.  Place the string around your dog's neck and mark the measure.  Then measure the string flat with a traditional tape measure or ruler.  Please do not add extra length "just in case".  This will result in a collar that is too big for your dog.  When selecting the size of collar, choose a size for which your dog's neck measurement is in the middle of the size range.

Measure your dog's neck in the middle of the neck, not too high up (close to the head) and not too far down (close to the shoulders).  This will result in a collar that is too small or too big.

If you are unsure of your measurements, contact us and we'll be happy to help!

If your dog already has a collar that you think fits perfectly, simply provide us with the measurements for the collar and we'll make your custom collar with the same hole placement.  To measure your dog's collar, lay the collar flat and place a measuring tape alongside.  Make sure that you are measuring from the CENTRE OF THE BUCKLE (not the end) to your preferred hole.  If you provide us with just the one hole placement, we will make it the middle hole on your new collar (unless specified otherwise).  Alternately, you can provide us with the measurements for all holes and we'll make your collar the same way.

What kind of leather do you use?

All of our collars are made from only the finest Latigo and English Bridle leathers in North America.

Latigo leather is designed to "take a licking and keep on ticking".  Widely used in horse tack - bridles, halters, reins, etc. - Latigo leather is stuffed with various oils during the tanning process.  This process, know as "hot stuffing" creates a soft supple leather than can withstand daily use.

English Bridle leather is designed to stand the test of time.  While this leather starts out stiffer than Latigo leather, it softens up beautifully with conditioning and use.  We love English Bridle leather and craft our own personal collars exclusively with this leather.

We deal exclusively with one tannery.  This way, we know where every hide we purchase comes from.  We purchase full hides and cut all of our leash and collar blanks in-house.  By doing so, we can ensure that only the best parts of the hides are used in our products.

To create the coloured linings in our collars, we only use Nappa leather.  This high grade garment leather is made of lambskin and comes in a variety of bright, fun colours.  It's perfect for our Peekaboo collars.

It is important to note that as leather is a natural product, it may change colour over time.  This is normal.  Lighter coloured leather will often darken as it ages and absorbs the natural oils from your dog's coat.

How do I care for my leather collar? Is it true that I can't get it wet?

While we don't recommend that you soak your leather collar on a daily basis, if your dog decides to go for a swim one day, it won't ruin your collar.  Neither will a bit of mud or dirt.  ;)

To care for your leather collar (or any leather product, for that matter), follow these simple instructions:

If your collar gets wet, either hang it to dry or lay it out flat on a dish towel or other absorbant material.  Allow the leather to dry then condition it with a quality leather conditioner.  We recommend Oakwook Leather Conditioning Creme or Leather Honey.  Both of these conditioners will be readily absorbed by your leather without leaving a sticky, oily feeling behind.  Simply apply the conditioner liberally to your collar, allow it to be absorbed for a couple of hours (ideally), then wipe off any excess.  Buff your collar with a clean soft cloth.  Blizzard Fleece works great as a buffing cloth for leather!

DO NOT use Neatsfoot oil on your leather!  It will darken all light colour leathers and may damage your collar's decorations.  Neatsfoot oil will also break down any stitching there may be on your leather products.

If your collar needs to be cleaned, simply clean with mild dish soap or, preferably, saddle soap (we like good ole glycerine soap).  If using saddle soap, use a damp cloth.  Rub the cloth on the saddle soap and clean your leather.  You SHOULD NOT have suds on your leather when using saddle soap!  Rinse your leather off with a clean DAMP, not wet, cloth.  When cleaning leather, less really is more.  Once cleaned, condition your collar as above.

I purchased or received a FBD Collar from someone but don't like the stone colours. Can you change them for me?

Yes!  For a nominal fee, we'll be happy to change out the stone colours for you.  Please note that we cannot change out the stone colours on collars that have an inner lining.
